I am an unknown writer who, like half the population, thinks I could write a book that everyone would want to buy and that I will make my fortune.
The only things I have ever had published are newspaper articles on Social Security legal matters for a local newspaper. So I did not tell anyone that I love writing, but when my husband decided that we should tour Australia I sent weekly emails out to friends which were often eighteen pages long just because I enjoyed sending them. However, if they had not received them by Monday night each week I started to recieve text messages and emails asking where the next installmen was? It was annoying as I was supposed to be on holiday and felt that I was back to deadlines again! Many of the recipients suggested I edit the story of our life on the road into a book.
I can’t describe what I’ve written as although there is a lot of information about the places we visited, it is a far more general “warts and all” type of script with all the things that went wrong, my changing attitudes and mental conflictions about being on the road. What it’s like living 24/7 with your partner?, in a confined space with a load more rubbish that I found interesting!
Having been nagged for two years, I edited the pages twice to try and cut it back ,correct grammar, spelling, remove names, to be ready but I have no idea what to do with it. So I am sending it to you which I am sure must overwhelm you with delight, but if you do get around to reading the few chapters I have sent as a sample, please feel free to offer advice along with any rejection letter.
If that wasen’t enough, I have a second book as it took another two years for us to complete our journey around Australia but I haven’t looked at it yet.( The further trips I refused to send emails to anyone as I wasn’t going to be caught out twice.)
We have had our motor home on the market recently and have been inundated with couples wanting to buy, who are desperate to get on the road and who are obviously as green as we were. These are those that aren’t scared of it’s size(34 feet) or haven’t sold their homes, boats or land yet. I cannot believe that so many people will sell everything when they have not even tried life on the road.
Perhaps it is a diary, part travel book and I am beginning to think, judging by some of the people we have met, a book that might offer some sound advice.
Lisa Timms, who wrote these diaries was born in Nottingham, U.K., she had three children in her first marriage. They immegrated to Australia in 1981, she divorced and married John Timms in 1983 and worked in Brisbane for Welfare Rights as a volunteer in a quasi-legal position after training at Queenaland Univercity. After having a successful career in real estate in retirement and now owning several properties, John and Lisa toured Australia over a period of years between January 2004 and March2010. They both returned to U.K. for family reasons, her three children have careers in Queensland. John Timms published "Should I Gowalkabout in Australia"(Diary1) plus "Should I Gowalkabout in Australia Again"(Diaries2 & 3) posthumously in his wife's memory, she had always wanted to write a book.
