Current Affairs programs always picture people sitting on the beachside with a glass of wine in their hands and people interviewed tell us that it is all wine, friends and relaxation. What utter tripe! It’s a journey, a
remarkable journey, an endless journey and so many things go wrong ( Murphy’s Law).
As for sitting on the beach at sunset, unless you are immune to mosquitoes and sandflies or are stinking of repellent you never do so-it’s a myth. It’s time people knew the reality of life on the road before they sell up their homes as so many have done to raise the cash to buy their dream motor home or caravan and four wheel drive. So many times we have met a couple where one is deliriously happy {usually the male who does not have to cut the lawn any more) and the other desperately missing their kids or grandchildren (usually the woman).
As Americans seem to like all things Australiana, they would perhaps be fascinated with the concept of my diary and travels although they tend to travel as we do. Instead go from California to Arizona and back again as the previous owners of our “Big Rig” did. “The Bus” as we called it, seemed to be identical to that which Jack Nicholson drove in the film called “About Schmidt” where he was seen to sunbathe on the roof. However, there shouls be enough information to encourage them to visit areas of specific interest.
Lisa Timms, who wrote these diaries was born in Nottingham, U.K., she had three children in her first marriage. They immegrated to Australia in 1981, she divorced and married John Timms in 1983 and worked in Brisbane for Welfare Rights as a volunteer in a quasi-legal position after training at Queenaland Univercity. After having a successful career in real estate in retirement and now owning several properties, John and Lisa toured Australia over a period of years between January 2004 and March2010. They both returned to U.K. for family reasons, her three children have careers in Queensland. John Timms published "Should I Gowalkabout in Australia"(Diary1) plus "Should I Gowalkabout in Australia Again"(Diaries2 & 3) posthumously in his wife's memory, she had always wanted to write a book.
